The Plastic Revolution

‘The Plastic Revolution’ will be opening from the 1st April at Bassetlaw Museum, Retford. This new exhibition will focus on the uses and types of early plastics.

 

As part of my work as a Collections Intern at Bassetlaw Museum, I was given the opportunity to develop and create a new temporary exhibition, about the Plastic Revolution. I decided upon this theme, through exploring the collections and stores of Bassetlaw Museum. I combined this with my own interest in early-mid 20th Century history. I thought it would be interesting to look at the development of, and all the applied uses of the first natural and synthetic plastics, plus the wide variety of uses they had.

In this exhibition, you will learn about three of the main types of early plastics from the early-mid 20th Century:

  1. Celluloid
  2. Bakelite
  3. Lucite

 

You will discover how they were used for domestic items, toys, personal grooming and industry items.

So, if you would like to know more about these revolutionary materials and see some of the fascinating items from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, pop along to the Plastic Revolution at Bassetlaw Museum from 1st April until September 2017.

Introducing: Yanqiu Autumn Dai, Strategic Advisor to the Culture Syndicates Board

  Autumn is a highly qualified and experienced heritage researcher, practitioner, and consultant based in China. Educated at the University of California, she graduated with a BA in Art History and International Relations Global Business (IRGB) before completing her MSc in Visual Material and Museum Anthropology at the University of Oxford before embarking on a successful career in heritage and the arts around the world. Running Up That Hill by Claire Roe

"How do you know if someone is a runner?" "Don't worry; they'll tell you." As little as 18 months ago, I would have definitely been guilty of crack ing the joke above . However, yesterday I bought my third ‘proper’ pair of running shoes, which meant today was ‘new running shoes” day and I was actually excited.
