Map Making: Kettering Co-operatives

Image
30th August 2017  In  Community Engagement ,  News And Opportunities I blogged about my trip to visit the ‘Big Yellow Caravan’ in Sneinton Market a few months ago and during that trip I was inspired by a community map idea. After a bit of research, I decided to start a project to commission an artist to create a similar style map for Kettering Museum and Art Gallery. The Artist Finding an artist to commission to complete the work was the hardest part, despite help and recommendations from the then Gallery Officer, no-one seemed keen to be involved with the project. Then, during the Fill [This Space] submissions day, Emma Read from One Off Maps walked in and changed everything. Emma runs her own, small business of one off pieces of art. Mainly she works small scale, but every element of the map is researched, planned, drawn and painted by her. Each is completely unique – there is nothing else like it! She creates maps for weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, open gardens, B&

Community Outreach: A Two Way Learning Process

Image
15th August 2017  In  Community Engagement ,  News And Opportunities Whilst undertaking the Resilience Syndicate Internship, I have been fortunate to meet so many different people within the Mansfield area and feel privileged that they have chosen to share their memories with me during different outreach projects I’ve undertaken. Taking after my Dad, I love to listen to stories and chat with different people, especially if a drink and cake is also included. Outreach programmes are designed to take a Museum exhibition or activity out into the community, whether it is to engage with a new audience or provide access to the Museum for individuals who are unable to get to the site. It is naïve to think that this engagement activity, and the learning process that accompanies it, is only one way. I have learnt so much about the Mansfield area, as well as different objects, interests and peoples lives, and this has helped to shape future engagement opportunities and project delivery. Image

Health and well-being case study

Image
3rd August 2017  In  Case Studies This case study outlines how the Resilience Syndicate project designed and piloted an outreach scheme aimed at tackling loneliness and social isolation amongst older people by facilitating their engagement with their local cultural heritage, at Poppy Fields in Mansfield. The project built upon existing knowledge and engagement models used by museums when engaging this audience, producing recommendations for how best to reach out to isolated and lonely individuals. Also identified, were potential problems and risk factors associated with this type of outreach. The case study provides a useful model for other museums to replicate and build on, and will be of use to all museum sector professionals who are interested in widening their audiences, whilst also fulfilling a social mission focusing on health and well-being. Rutland on Film

Image
2nd August 2017  In  News And Opportunities In the coming months, we will be working with Rutland County Museum to create film footage to enhance the interpretation of two objects from their Agricultural Collection, a threshing machine and a reaper binder. The films will feature footage of the machinery in action, whilst answering questions that the public have posed about the objects. We hope to encourage local involvement with the project by asking the public what they really want to know about the objects. We will collect this information online and at a number of events in Rutland: 9 th  August at Oakham Castle and Rutland County Museum 19 th  August at Oakham Farmers’ Market and Rutland County Museum   To answer the public questions, we are teaming up with a number of experts, who will share their knowledge as part of an oral history event. The audio and video footage will be edited together to create two short films, which will be available to view alongside the objects at Rut
